Corona virus forcing companies to implement working from home – this software is needed now

Having spurred panic-buying in pharmacies, health and beauty retailers and supermarkets, the coronavirus has now reached the software industry. Software vendor VENDOSOFT has experienced a 20% increase in demand for Remote Desktop Service CALs in the past week alone. Since Monday of this week, demand from companies has continued to soar even further.

Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is an umbrella term for a function of Microsoft Windows Servers that enables users to remotely access data and Windows applications. With the help of RDS, a connection can be established with the servers in the company’s network from a remote location. If you’re telling your employees to work from home, licence regulations require you to have these access licences.

VENDOSOFT prepared for the strong demand

The elevated demand comes as no surprise to the reseller of new and used software. According to VENDOSOFT managing director Björn Orth, the company is fully stocked. There are some minor shortages, but only of older, and thus particularly inexpensive, versions, such as Microsoft Windows Server 2016 RDS CAL or its predecessor from 2008.

‘We have bought RDS CALs for Microsoft Windows Server 2019 proactively,’ reports Orth. If required, downgrading to earlier versions is also possible. The licence expert can thus reassure companies worried about how they will manage the unexpected demand for more home office workstations.

Acquire RDS CALs at a good price

Unlike Microsoft itself, VENDOSOFT also distributes RDS licences as used software – and thus 30% to 40% below the original price. ‘This should be good news for IT managers. After all, this unexpected demand for Remote Desktop Service CALs is unlikely to have been incorporated into the 2020 IT budget,’ explains Björn Orth.
