Windows Server CAL: To get the most out of your server

Windows Server is a powerful and versatile operating system that can help companies and organisations to manage and protect their IT infrastructure.
Windows Server operating systems are used by businesses and organisations of all sizes to perform a wide range of tasks, including:
  • Data storage and management: Windows Server can be used as a file server, storage server, mail server or web server.
  • Deployment and management of applications: Windows Server can be used to deploy and manage enterprise applications including ERP, CRM and content management systems.
  • Network services: Windows Server can be used to deploy and manage network services including domain controllers, DHCP servers and DNS servers.
To use Microsoft Server to the full extent, you not only need the software, but also an additional licence called a CAL (Client Access Licence). Windows Server CALs are licences that allow client devices or users to access and use Microsoft Windows Server. CALs are needed for each client device or user who accesses the Windows Server software in addition to the server licence.

User CALs and Device CALs: Two types of Windows Server CAL

Depending on your licensing model, you will need to use different types of access licences:
  • User CALs for direct user access to the server
  • Device CALs for indirect access, such as via a web application, or for server access by multiple users from the same device

At VENDOSOFT, you can purchase Microsoft licenses for versions 2016 - 2022. The main differences are as follows:
  • Windows Server 2016: New features including Windows Server Container, Storage Spaces Direct and Nano Server:
  • Windows Server 2019: Integration of new features including Azure Stack HCI and Kubernetes
  • Windows Server 2022: Integration of new security features and the optimisation of performance and scalability.
Support: Windows Server 2012 is no longer supported. Support for the 2016 version will be available until at least 2027.

The two main Editions of Windows Server are the Standard and Datacenter Editions. The two Editions differ in a number of features, with the Datacenter Edition including all the features of the Standard Edition plus several additional features.

Licence Differences

The Standard Edition of Windows Server is licensed on a single physical server basis. The Datacenter Edition of Windows Server is licensed on a single socket basis. A socket is a processor core.

Which Edition is right for me?

The right Edition of Windows Server depends on your organisation's individual needs.
  • The Standard Edition is a great choice for organisations that need a limited number of virtual machines.
  • Datacenter Edition is the right choice for organisations that need an unlimited number of virtual machines or the additional features of Datacenter Edition.
Let our Microsoft Licensing Professionals help you decide which solution is right for you. You can also purchase the matching Windows Server CALs.

Windows Server CALs: Purchase pre-owned from Vendosoft

There are a number of reasons why you should purchase pre-owned software and Windows Server CALs:
  • Cost savings: Pre-owned software is usually a lot less expensive than new. Allowing you to save up to 70 % or more.
  • Flexibility: Pre-owned Windows Server CALs can be a great way to add flexibility to your IT infrastructure. You can purchase the exact access licences you need today, then upgrade or customise later as your requirements change.
  • Sustainability: Pre-owned CALs are a more sustainable choice than new licences.
If you are considering purchasing a pre-owned Edition of Windows Server and access licences, there are a few things you should bear in mind:
  • It is important to make sure that the products you are purchasing are genuine and legitimate. Resellers of pre-owned licences are plenty, but not all of them are trustworthy.
  • It is important to make sure that the licences meet for your requirements.. Make sure you purchase the right Edition (User CALs or Device CALs) and the right number of licences.
  • Make sure you find a reliable reseller. Read reviews and ask for legally compliant documentation before you make your choice. Compare prices, but do not be fooled by cheap deals!
VENDOSOFT is an authorised reseller and official Microsoft Solutions Partner. Our licensing consultants are available to assist you at any time before and after your purchase. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about Microsoft licensing in person.
