Microsoft CALs are licensed under the Server + CAL model. Each running server instance requires a server licence, complemented by an access licence for every user (User CAL) or device (Device CAL). Only the combination of both results in a fully compliant licensing setup.
Choosing between User CALs and Device CALs is one of the most important licensing decisions. User CALs are ideal when employees access services from multiple devices, such as laptops, smartphones or terminal servers. Device CALs are more cost-effective when several users share the same device, for example in shift-based environments or shared workstations.
If multiple Microsoft server products are deployed, a CAL Suite is often the better option.
